Abstract: |
A large scale phased evaluation was undertaken between July 2011 and July 2012 at Greenburn Surface Mine (Braehead Farm Extension), New Cumnock, East Ayrshire in advance of mining operations. The evaluation area contained a number of sites identified in the Environmental Statement. These consisted of a row of cottages annotated 'Miners Row' on the 1910 Ordnance Survey map, a domestic structure (probably a farmhouse) which is annotated 'Shiel' on the 2nd Edition Ordnance Survey map, and a stone built two compartment structure also annotated 'Shiel' on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map. These structures were evaluated and recorded, and were deemed to relate to 19th/20th century industrial and agricultural activity. Away from the structures extensive evidence of 19th/20th century agricultural improvements was identified. This took the form of numerous field drains of both the ceramic cylinder and horseshoe types. There were no features, deposits or artefacts of archaeological significance identified. |
