Abstract:
To inform a forthcoming planning application, a trial trench archaeological evaluation was undertaken on land at Wesley Way and Winceby Gardens, Horncastle. The site is currently a single field utilised as arable farmland. There are no known archaeological monuments lying within the development site, however the site lies on the eastern side of the Romano-British settlement of Banovallum, and Iron Age and Roman remains have been found in the vicinity. A geophysical survey undertaken within the site identified a scatter of isolated responses suggesting modern ferrous rich objects within the plough soil, with a concentration along the western boundary with Wesley Way, but no magnetic variation indicating archaeological remains. Three linear features were revealed during this scheme of trenching; one possibly natural, and two 19th century or later ditches, probably relating to post-medieval farming. No significant archaeological remains were encountered.
