Abstract: |
An archaeological Desk-based Assessment has been carried out on The Old Lodge, Limpsfield, Surrey in advance of proposed construction of three terraced houses within its grounds . The desk-based assessment has established that the potential for archaeological deposits to be surviving on the site from the prehistoric through to the Anglo-Saxon period is low. Conversely the settlement of Limpsfield was first established during the Medieval period. Research of the surrounding area suggests a continuity of occupation close to the site from the Medieval period to the present day. As such there is considered to be high potential for Medieval deposits to be encountered on site. However, any such deposits may be heavily truncated, or alternatively, sealed beneath overburden. Therefore an appropriate level of mitigation is recommended, being dependant on the specific extent and depth of any intrusive groundwork associated with the strip and pad footings for the houses or for general phases of ground reduction associated with landscaping of the garden. |
