Abstract:
Historic Environment Projects Cornwall Council was requested to undertake an assessment of the potential impacts of the construction of a large agricultural barn adjacent to a number of Scheduled barrows at Lower Bogee Downs, St. Ervan Cornwall. Geophysical survey of the site was commissioned from Archaeophysica Ltd. The site is a former area of downland which sites several barrows, many of these being intervisible with one another, some being clustered into discrete groups. From the mid 18th century until the early 20th century, the downs were subjected to a process of agricultural improvement, and these barrow groups became incorporated into the newly-created fieldscape. Most are Scheduled Monuments. Although still a lightly-settled upland area, modern developments have not been absent within this landscape, there being a large and very prominent wind farm on the nearby Bears Downs, whilst a pair of wind turbines have recently been erected just to the east. The agricultural barn wind proposed for Lower Bogee Common will be the first visually prominent 'modern' feature to be erected on this particular area of former downland, and will have impacts on the settings of designated heritage assets within the surrounding landscape, in particular two nearby Scheduled barrows. Within the survey area, no archaeological features were found during the walkover survey, whilst the magnetometer survey of the site proposed for the barn revealed no archaeological features.
