Abstract: |
Sudbury, land off St Bartholomew's Lane (SUY 137, TL 8684 4246) evaluation trenching for a small residential development of three dwellings on land directly to the north of the site of a small medieval leper hospital that fronted onto the Melford Road and which was established by 1372 did not reveal any archaeological features with the only finds of any age being a secondary flint flake of earlier prehistoric date and a single medieval pottery sherd. Examination of a late 19th century history of the town revealed that the leper hospital was rebuilt as three almshouses in 1619-20 with the last leper occupying them dying in 1813, following this the 17th century buildings were demolished in 1858. |
