Abstract: |
RPS (on behalf of Sanctuary Group) are gathering baseline archaeological information (RPS 2010) to support a planning application for land at Sharpes Corner, Lakenheath. It is proposed that a very sheltered housing development be constructed within the proposed Development Area (DA).Albion Archaeology undertook archaeological observation during geo-technical test pitting at the Sharpes Corner development site in Lakenheath. The sequence of soils, derived from Chalk, was largely uniform across the site. No archaeological deposits or artefacts were encountered in any of the test pits. Several areas of modern disturbance (possibly backfilled quarry pits) were revealed within seven test pits. Another element of these works comprised fieldwalking. The fieldwalking identified 71 artefacts from 67 findspots. They comprised items from the prehistoric, Roman, medieval, post-medieval and modern periods. . |
