Abstract: |
Archaeological fieldwork was carried out during construction of a house at Inchnadamph, Sutherland, in response to a planning condition. Engineering test pits were excavated under archaeological supervision, and construction of the access road was subject to a watching brief. A controlled topsoil strip was then undertaken on the house site itself. The house is to be built within a group of hill fields shown on the 1st edition 6 inch map, defined by rough, irregular stone dyke. Near the access road a hut circle was identified and safeguarded. The hill fields defined by the dykes seem to roughly coincide with an area of much earlier clearance probably associated with this hut circle. However, the only archaeological features noted during the watching brief and controlled topsoil strip were two dykes and the ploughed-out remains of a possible clearance cairn. |
