Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken by Headland Archaeology in August/September 2014 at Hillhouse Farm, Cambridge, Gloucestershire, where a total of 78 trenches were excavated over an area of fifteen largely pastured fields. In general very few archaeological remains were uncovered by the trenching and the resulting potential for the site to contain significant remains is assessed as low. Evidence for medieval plough activity was identified in the form of ridge and furrow, while on the western side of the development area, a single small charcoal filled feature was found to contain heat affected stone and flint, dating to the Later Mesolithic/Early Neolithic period, plus potentially intrusive medieval pottery. Close by, flints dating to the same period were also found in the lower plough soil of the ridge and furrow. Geological changes over the site as a whole were also noted. The area is largely located on the flood plain of the River Severn, and is therefore likely to have seen only transient human occupation in the past. |
