Abstract:
Archaeological monitoring works are being undertaken in respect to the construction of wind turbines at GlaxoSmithKline, Irvine, North Ayrshire. During the monitoring works for the ground breaking works at Turbine 4 and its associated haul road, located to the south and east-southeast of the GlaxoSmithKline factory, a small number of significant archaeological features were uncovered which warranted the need for archaeological excavation works to be carried out on site. The excavation works revealed the presence of a three features, two of which may have been related. These features may represent the heavily disturbed remains of a structure or a group of isolated pits but with the lack of artefactual evidence and considering the condition of their survival, their function remains unclear at present. The fact that they are located close to a known prehistoric site at Turbine 3, discovered during previous monitoring works, could mean that there is a possibility that they too are prehistoric in date. All of the other features identified within the excavation area proved to be either post medieval, modern agricultural or naturally occurring in nature. T Rees 2014.
