Abstract: |
Excavation of two footing trenches, a soak-away trench and a soak-away pit at 24 Out Risbygate Street, Bury St Edmunds, revealed 5 child skeletons within individual grave cuts. The skeletons were in relatively good condition and are thought to be part of the cemetery of St Peter's Hospital, which operated from the 12th to the 17th century. No other features or finds were recorded. None of the skeletons were old enough to be sexed and four of them had no clear skeletal evidence for disease, or cause of death. However, the final individual had suffered symptoms of Klippel-Feil syndrome and may also have had its heart removed post-mortem, either for medical reasons or possibly as part of a superstitious practice. |
