Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology were commissioned by the University of Sheffield to complete the reporting for a programme of historic building recording and archaeological excavations undertaken in 2005-7 at the site of the Bolsterstone glassworks, Stocksbridge, South Yorkshire. A rectified photographic survey of the standing building formed a baseline record for building recording, which included a survey of the roof structure, dendrochronological and mortar assessments. Eleven trenches were hand excavated within the former glasshouse and adjacent paddock to determine the extent of known archaeological features, depth of soil cover and degree of preservation. This study has provided a greater understanding of the original layout of the glasshouse and surrounding yards and ancillary structures. The interior working layout of the Bolsterstone glasshouse appears to represent a period of experimentation, immediately before larger workshops were established in the mid 18th century. The arrangement of two pairs of opposing annealing fireplaces in a separate working area to the glass furnace is unique design and a significant discovery. The deposits within the paddock represent in situ spreads of waste material dumped during the use of the glasshouse, rather than later re-use of furnace material as made ground. This is confirmed by 18th century pottery and glass waste within the layers. This project has demonstrated technological innovation and a date for last use of the furnace (early 18th century). It has also identified new map evidence depicting the layout of the glass works and evidence for its former internal layout with a total of four annealing furnaces.
