Abstract:
Pre-Construct Archaeological Services Ltd was commissioned to undertake an archaeological evaluation on land to the south-west of Copper Hill Quarry, Ancaster, in the South Kesteven District of Lincolnshire. This work was undertaken to fulfil a condition attached to planning permission for the commercial extraction of limestone at this site. The evaluation consisted of a programme of trial trench evaluation, comprising a total of 3 trenches each measuring 20m by 2m targeting possible features identified by a geophysical survey previously undertaken on the site. No archaeological features of any kind were positively identified in any of the three trenches. The natural substrate was observed to be very diverse throughout the trenches, which had been previously observed by the geophysical survey. The identified possible features may be the product of this variation within the natural substrate or modern waste material within the plough-soil. No artefacts of archaeological significance were observed.
