Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation was carried out on land at the former site of Anchor Hotel, Thetford, Norfolk (TL 868 830); ENF 124 312. The trial trench evaluation was carried out at the above site from 15th March to the 1st April 2010 in advance of a proposal to redevelop the site. Deposits of archaeological interest were recorded in all three trial trenches. Complex archaeological sequences of activity dating from 10th or 11th century to the 20th century were recorded in each trench. The earliest phases of human activity involved pits for rubbish disposal. The presence of a cemetery in the vicinity is suggested by residual human remains recovered from these early pits. Post-holes and clay floors representing Late Saxon or Early Medieval buildings were evident. This phase was succeeded by a similar medieval building phase. One trench had relatively limited evidence for building, probably because its proximity to the former river course made the ground prone to flooding. Here the later phases of activity were represented by a possible medieval ditch and post-medieval tanning pit. In one trench there was a possibly medieval gravel road that appears to have remained in use until the 17th century. Same buildings were probably in use until at least the 16th century as evidenced by finds recovered from a collapsed clay oven, and a brick drain incorporating a re-used ridge tile. Abandonment of the area may have occurred in the 17th century, when thick homogenous deposits accumulated over the medieval buildings and the gravel road. In the 19th century a complex of maltings buildings was constructed on the site. Elements of these 19th century buildings were seen in all three trenches. It is known that the last of them were demolished in the 1960's, at which time part of the site was given Scheduled Ancient Monument status, and the remainder became parking for the Anchor hotel.
