Abstract:		 Three trenches were excavated in order to investigate the archaeological potential of a site at Risbygate Street car park, Bury St Edmunds. The trenching exposed at least five pits, two wells, one of which was flint and mortar lined and numerous postholes representing several phases of occupation from the medieval and early post-medieval periods. The features are buried by rubble which covered the entire site and was directly over the natural subsoil. Below the rubble the archaeology is vulnerable to any development of the site and a programme of open area excavation has been recommended.
