Abstract:
Geevor Mine was the only mine of significance in West Cornwall during the 20th century and the economic and cultural heart of its community. It was saved from obliteration in 1992 following its final closure in 1991 and has since been developed into a prestigious heritage site which attracts over 35,000 visitors annually and employs 26 local people. In recent years both Wheal Jane and South Crofty - the only other two large 20th century tin mines in Cornwall - have been razed to the ground, and what survives at Geevor is now exceptionally rare, some components representing the only surviving examples of their type anywhere in Britain. In 2002, a Conservation Management Plan was drawn up by PLB Consulting, and in 2013 an update was commissioned to ensure that the now Scheduled site continues to retain those values which make it so important. The plan summarise the history of the site and its significances, the issues and vulnerabilities affecting it, a conservation philosophy for the site with linked visions and aims, and a series of policies which have been adopted by the site owners and managers to guide its future development. Appendices detail the specific issues currently affecting the site, provide a detailed SWOT analysis and set out some of the proposals for site development which are currently under consideration. Detailed feature sheets have also been produced for the buildings making up the site, together with pro-forma sheets to be used by site staff to record all maintenance works.
