Abstract:
MOLA carried out a programme of archaeological mitigation works on land at Rushden Hospital, Rushden, Northamptonshire during February 2014. The excavation revealed a semi-circular ditch and associated postholes which were of probable Iron Age date, although no dating of the enclosure was recovered. Two poorly preserved inhumation burials may have been of Roman or early medieval date. There were remnant furrows of medieval ridge and furrow cultivation. A ditch on the same alignment as the furrows was probably of medieval origin. However, this ditch was retained as a boundary up to the middle of the 20th century, even following the introduction of a system of ditches set at right angles.
