Abstract: |
This report presents the results of an archaeological evaluation and historic visual impact assessment carried out by South West Archaeology Ltd. (SWARCH) at Tredinnick Farm, St Newlyn East, Cornwall, in advance of the construction of a single 500kW (77m to tip) wind turbine. This follows on from a geophysical survey carried out at the site in December 2013. The proposed turbine would be located in a field containing two known cropmark enclosures; these monuments, as well as other features, were identified in the geophysical survey. Five trenches were opened across the site to target the geophysical anomalies, and the evaluation validated the results of the earlier survey. The relict field system could not be dated, but the larger enclosure was probably Romano-British in date, while the smaller enclosure, and related Holloways(?), were probably medieval in date. In terms of the wider landscape, the site is located on the end of a gentle hill spur. The large-scale plateau-like landform and relatively simple land use should serve to diminish the visual scale of the development. Most of the designated heritage assets in the wider area are located at such a distance to minimise the impact of the proposed turbine, or else the contribution of setting to overall significance is less important than other factors. Many of the buildings and monuments would be partly or wholly insulated from the effects of the proposed turbine by a combination of local blocking and the topography. However, the presence of a new, modern and visually intrusive vertical element in the landscape would impinge on a large number of heritage assets (negative/minor), even though only a small number would be more seriously affected. These are Trethiggey Villa, Coswarth Farmhouse, Trevessa Farmhouse, the Church of St Enoder, the Church of St. Newlynna, and the Hillfort at Cargoll (negative/moderate). |
