Abstract:
Outline planning permission was granted for the erection of new housing on land to the east of the village of Exning, north of the A14 dual-carriageway, by Forest Heath District Council (F/2012/0653/OUT). A condition placed on this permission required a programme of archaeological investigation of the site, initially consisting of evaluation by trial trenching and geophysical survey (carried out by Pre-Construct Archaeology and Cranfield University in 2012) with targeted area excavation and monitoring of groundwork once the initial stages of work had identified the presence of archaeological deposits dating to the Roman and prehistoric periods. The monitored groundwork was, in the main, found to not affect archaeologically relevant levels. The majority of the access road was built up, not terraced into the existing hillside and for much of its length the associated drains did not penetrate the modern dump deposit spread across the central and eastern half of the site. In addition the area of targeted excavation was significantly reduced once the nature of a large deposit of modern overburden became clear. Two ditches, already revealed in the earlier archaeological evaluation, were investigated, with two additional small pits recorded near the northern edge of the excavation area. Finds from the two ditches were dated to the Middle Bronze Age and Roman period, adding to the archaeological evidence for activity in both of these periods in the vicinity.
