Abstract: |
In March and April 2016, Archaeological Solutions Ltd carried out a magnetic gradiometer survey on 29 hectares of land at Chilton Leys, Stowmarket, Suffolk (NGR TM 0318 5950). The survey was commissioned to inform and support a planning application for a proposed residential development. The survey identified three probable enclosures of archaeological origin and a fourth possible enclosure in the north-east of the survey area. Four other positive linear anomalies were identified which may represent former boundaries and seven discrete anomalies were present that may represent infilled features and the remains of possible hearths/kilns of archaeological origin. A network of positive linear anomalies crossed the site and are consistent with historical boundaries and track ways drawn on the first edition Ordnance Survey map. Other responses resulted from natural geomorphological features and recent agricultural activity and disturbance. |
