Abstract: |
An archaeological excavation and Strip Map Sample investigation was undertaken by Cotswold Archaeology in June and July 2014 at Mayo's Land, Quedgeley, Gloucester. The excavation area was located across the west, and the SMS across the south-east of the development area, and was targeted on Iron Age features identified in a previous evaluation of the site. The excavation identified three main phases of activity. A mid-late Iron Age field system was identified across the site, with broadly contemporary Roundhouses located to the south. A 1st - 2nd century AD Roman rectilinear ditched enclosure was identified to the west of site, and a 11th - 13th century medieval ditch was also recorded to the west. The artefact assemblages recovered from the excavation were consistent with those of a low-status rural farmstead, with only a small amount of regional or imported pottery types. The burial of an adult male of 18-25 years was recorded in a grave slot closely adjacent to the south-east corner of Enclosure Ditch B on the western margins of the excavation area. The incomplete skeletal remains were undated, part from a single sherd of 2nd to 3rd century date in the grave fill. |
