Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology commissioned by AECOM, on behalf of the Sherford Consortium, undertook an archaeological excavation within the Phase 1 area of the proposed New Community at Sherford, Plymouth, Devon, centred on National Grid Reference SX 54113 53652. Features identified during the excavation consisted mostly of gullies or ditches, small pits and many postholes with clear concentrations in the east and west of the site. The former defined roundhouses and plot division boundaries. These predominantly date to the Iron Age and Romano-British period, based on the pottery recovered. although redeposited Bronze Age pottery were present in several features. The postholes and small pits, most of them undated, occurred in large groups, making identification of individual structures and their functions difficult though it is likely associated with settlement activity. Two quarry pits, located in the centre of the site were probably utilised for limestone extraction for construction of some of the roundhouses and other structures. A large stone-built structure located in the south-eastern corner of the site most likely was used a crop dryer (from the charred plant remains analysis undertaken). This is likely to date to the late Roman period as following disuse, a pewter plate and a mid-4th century coin was placed in the abandoned structure. Several larger ditches ran across the site on a north to south or east to west alignment. Part of a medieval/post-medieval field system, the remains of which still survive in parts of the wider development area and can be matched with tithe map field boundaries.
