Abstract: |
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Carillion Civil Engineering to undertake an archaeological evaluation in advance of the A1 junction improvements at Elkesley, Nottinghamshire DN22 8BN. The site has previously been subject to a detailed gradiometer survey covering 8.2ha and demonstrated the presence of a number of anomalies of possible archaeological interest within the survey area, along with regions of increased magnetic response. On the basis of this survey a scheme of archaeological evaluation by trial trenching was devised. This consisted of fourteen machine-excavated trenches located to both the north and south of the A1 carriageway in adjacent agricultural land. No features, deposits or material of archaeological significance were identified during the evaluation fieldwork. |
