Abstract:
A metal detector survey was undertaken across the proposed development site on 23 March 2017 due to the possibility of the site being within the area of the early 14th-century Battle of Barra. A programme of machine-cut and hand-cleaned trial-trenches was carried out on 10 April 2017. The site is approximately 2 hectares in size and nine trenches were excavated with a 2m ditching bucket and a 14 ton tracked machine representing 5% of the area of the proposed development. The W end of the site had been historically very waterlogged with 0.2m of waterlogged topsoil on top of iron rich sand and gravel subsoils. Up to 1.6m of dumped topsoil and rubble has been deposited on this end of the site to level it up. The topsoil at the E end of the site is typically 0.2m deep, disturbed and containing very modern finds and several stone holes infilled with soil. The metal detecting prior to trenching produced only very modern finds (bottle tops, foil and reinforcing bar). Metal finds from the metal detectoring of spoil heaps produced two buckles, both 18th century or later, one 18th-century halfpenny, 18th century or later button with rear shank, later silver brooch, lead waste, iron plough and tractor parts, nails and bolts, all probably from the neighbouring housing estate. There were no medieval finds from the site and the west end had been very waterlogged in the pre-modern period with flooding from the neighbouring Meadow Burn.
