Abstract: |
This Phase 2 evaluation was preceded by field-walking, a geophysical survey, and initial phase of 90 trenches. Fifty-five evaluation trenches were excavated, covering an area of approximately 23.77ha. Scattered remains of earlier prehistoric material were recovered across the site with one pit contained heat-altered flint located in the north suggesting earlier prehistoric activity. A series of field boundary ditches and pits provisionally dated to the early/middle Iron Age and late Iron Age/early Roman periods give evidence for settlement activity within the vicinity of the site. The only evidence uncovered during this phase of medieval activity were likely intrusive fragments of CBM in earlier dated features. Post-medieval field boundary ditches and a quarry pit demonstrate later use of the site for agricultural purposes. |
