Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken at Land at Woodborough Farm, Winscombe, North Somerset (NGR ST 41766 57403). It was commissioned by Richard Smalley of CgMs, in advance of a proposed residential development which has been granted outline planning permission by North Somerset Council. A desk-based assessment of the site, supplemented with research by the Winscombe and Sandford Archaeological and Historical Project and a geophysical survey, identified that the area has a long history of dispersed settlement and that Woodborough Farm on the northern edge of the site may have medieval origins. Thirty two trenches were excavated across the site. No significant archaeological features, deposits or stratified finds were identified during the evaluation. Two undated features which were probably tree throws were identified, as well as an undated colluvial layer that corresponded with the natural topography of the site, and a series of modern drains. A small assemblage of residual artefacts reflects a background scatter from activity in the area in the prehistoric, medieval, and post-medieval periods; manuring of pasture probably accounts for the incorporation of finds into the site area. The majority of the assemblage pertains to 17th and 18th century land use.
