Abstract:
The site is situated on the corner of Scrutton Street and Curtain Road in the London borough of Hackney. The scheduled monument of Holywell Priory lies c 260m to the north-west and an Elizabethan play house known as The Theatre, lies just to the east. A large channel was observed that cut through the natural brick earth and gravels on site. Geoarcharchaeological data shows this would have originated as a fast flowing ancient river way, later becoming a small intermittent stream or pond during the medieval and post-medieval periods. This is likely the north-western arm of the Walbrook channel, a known historic river. A compacted surface, possibly constituting a roadway overlay the marsh like conditions and open land that would have existed on the site in the early post-medieval period. The earliest significant archaeological remains encountered, consist of a large sequence of accumulated dumped waste covering the majority of the site. This has been well dated to have been mainly deposited in the second half of the 17th century and very early 18th century (1660-1710). This forms the south-eastern part of a mound historically referred to as 'Holywell Mount'. The upper layers of this dump of accumulated waste material then appears to have been deliberaltey cleared and levelled, immediately prior to development of the site in the late 18th century. The first development on site sometime after c 1780 consisted of brick built structures and an associated cellar and brick cess tank. The structural remains largely consisted of walls and brick floor surfaces made from a variety of brick types. Horwoods map of 1799 shows these to be terraced houses. A second phase of redevelopment, probably c 1850, changes the site layout to a number of larger structures, centered around a central yard area and a road leading onto Chapel Street, with granite sets laid out to the west. This is shown on the Ordnance Survey 1st edition 25
