Abstract:
Border Archaeology Ltd was instructed by Signature Homes and Construction Ltd to carry out a Programme of Archaeological Work comprising Archaeological Observation and Field Evaluation on land at Pinsley Road Leominster Herefordshire. The area comprises a narrow strip of land running N/S parallel to the main Newport-to-Shrewsbury railway and backing onto Pinsley Road. The site was formerly occupied by Pinsley Mill. It was thought to occupy the location of the medieval Priory Mill, which was in the ownership of Leominster Priory and which represents one of Leominster's first mills. A number of Test Pits were opened on the site under Archaeological Observation prior to development. The majority of these were devoid of archaeological finds or features, the exception being TP 5, which contained red brick, possibly demolition debris relating to the mill. Elsewhere on the site, a layer of disturbed natural may have been the result of levelling. A further possibility is the deposits lying beneath the topsoil are the result of either raising the surface to avoid flooding from the confluence of the Kenwater and the Lugg, or they may derive from alluviation associated with flooding. An evaluation trench subsequently opened on the site in the location of the mill structure revealed a masonry wall which had been subject to phases of alteration. Evidence for its demolition was also encountered. No evidence for the medieval Priory Mill was seen. Also recorded were a number of deposits relating to demolition and backfilling.
