Abstract: |
Three watching briefs were carried out by Museum of London Archaeology (MOLA) for Network Rail between April 2014 and September 2016 in the vicinity of the new Abbey Wood Crossrail station, within the Royal Borough of Greenwich. The three watching briefs were on an attenuation tank in April 2014, the car park area in June 2014 and on the Wickham Valley Watercourse culvert diversion between August and September 2016. Natural bedrock was not reached; however, sands and gravels were reached in the attenuation tank shaft at c minus 6.70m OD. Above these was a sequence of naturally laid down deposits that included peaty deposits. However no Prehistoric remains such as timber structures/ track ways were found associated with the peat in either the attenuation tank or in the Wickham Valley watercourse culvert diversion. The only Post-Medieval remains were a 19th-century brick crane base, which was found in Abbey Wood station car park, and was presumably associated with the railway. |
