Abstract: |
The site is located in a prominent area, overlooking the River Stour to the south, within a rich archaeological landscape. The site had previously been investigated by a geophysical survey so the twenty trenches of the evaluation targeted some of the anomalies identified in the survey while other trenches were placed on a formal grid across the rest of the area. The trenches were positioned within the cut area for the proposed farm reservoir. A number of modern field drains were recorded and these were likely to correspond to some of the geophysics anomalies recorded. Linear ditches were encountered in two of the trenches towards the northern edge of the evaluated area. One of the ditches was associated with a small amount of Roman pottery. Small pieces of probable prehistoric pottery and two pieces of struck flint from the same ditch are likely to be earlier, residual finds. Unstratified pottery from other trenches was dated to the later prehistoric, Late Iron Age/Roman transition and Roman periods. |
