Abstract: |
On the 6th October 2016, Britannia Archaeology Ltd (BA) undertook a trial trench evaluation at Endobec, St John's Street, Beck Row, Suffolk in advance of the construction of a dwelling. A design brief issued by Suffolk County Council Archaeology Service/Conservation Team (SCCAS/CT) required a single trial trench measuring 15.00m x 1.80m (Figure 4) to be excavated. Background research for the project indicated that medieval activity was most likely to be encountered, given the location of the site area near to the medieval core of Beck Row. The only phase of activity identified is represented by the three pits in the middle of the trench, 1004, 1007 and 1009. All three pits date to the 17th Century and probably had a primary function of chalk extraction, with a secondary function as waste dumping pits used for the disposal of domestic waste. These features may be indicative of early post-medieval backyard activity associated with dwellings on the outskirts of medieval Beck Row. |
