Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken by CFA Archaeology Ltd on land off Cobbler's Lane, Pontefract, West Yorkshire on 11th and 12th October 2012. Five trenches were excavated, revealing ploughmarks and cultivation furrows in several trenches (2,4 and 5) consistent with widespread use of the site for agricultural arable purposes. No dateable evidence was encountered from these, although the presence of an unstratified late medieval pottery sherd from the topsoil does suggest activity in the vicinity in the late medieval period. The ditch (003) encountered in Trench 4, towards the northern extent of the site, produced no dating evidence from its single fill except a sherd of Roman greyware pottery of 2nd-4th century origin, indicating the potential for Romano-British activity in the vicinity |
