Abstract:
South West Archaeology were commissioned to undertake a desk-based assessment and historic building appraisal on St. Peter and St. James Church, Halwill prior to a programme of renovation works to resolve various damp, drainage and structural issues. The church is first mentioned, dedicated to St. Peter, in 1161. It was rebuilt during the 1870s, with the medieval west tower and north nave wall retained, and it is thought that the dedication to St. James was added after this work. The plans for the rebuilding work appear to indicate that the original simple two-cell structure was largely covered by, or encapsulated in, the new work. There is however potential for undisturbed buried features. Footings from buildings located along the south east boundary (shown on early maps of the area) are possible. The potential for unmarked burials in all areas of the graveyard is extremely high, as acknowledged by the surveyor in 1876. The church is Grade II* Listed, and recorded as 14th century. The historic building appraisal suggests that more of the medieval fabric survives than is suggested within the listing text, and that this is most likely of a 13th century date. Any proposed works are likely to encounter further remains associated with the 19th century re-build of the church and its medieval precedent.
