Abstract:
South West Archaeology Ltd. was commissioned to undertake a programme of historic building recording at Lower Penhallow Farm, Philleigh, in Cornwall. This work was undertaken in order to assess the age and significance of the house, and comment on two possible development proposals (extensive renovation or demolition and replacement) and to set the building in its historical and archaeological context. Lower Penhallow farmhouse was built in one main phase in the mid to late 19th century on an existing farmstead. This was a purpose-built 'modern' dwelling, of block plan with two main rooms either side of a hall and stair with bedrooms above. An extension to the western elevation appears to have been altered a number of times during the later 19th and early 20th centuries, finally becoming a two-storey extension along the entire western elevation. The farmhouse is a 19th century building of a common regional type; it is in good condition but its interiors have undergone several phases of intensive modernisation in the late 20th and early 21st century that have severely affected its historic integrity and authenticity. It is possible a barn located to the south-west may represent the remains of an earlier house; this barn has recently been rebuilt and although the number and location of the openings has been preserved by the rebuild, it is unlikely this could be verified.
