Abstract:
South West Archaeology Ltd. was commissioned to undertake historic building recording and produce a statement of significance for The Cottage at Cremyll, Maker, Cornwall. This work included a desk-based assessment and was undertaken in order to determine the significance of The Cottage prior to a planning submission. The Cottage at Cremyll is a complex and confusing structure that has been extended and altered many times. At its core, the main range was probably built as the residence of the ferry keeper and/or ferrymen. Cremyll Ferry is attested from the early 13th century, and was owned by the Edgcumbe family from 1493 to 1946. The Cottage was in existence in 1724 and, on balance, the main range was probably constructed in the early 17th century, perhaps by the family of ferry-keeper Henry Blake 1588-1639. However, this would have been an unusually long building; it may be the case that the main range within The Cottage is actually an early 17th century kitchen extension. In the 1770s a crosswing was added to the north containing a fashionable pair of heated offices, perhaps the main office for the ferry offices. In the early 19th century the crosswing was incorporated into the domestic space of the cottages, and a lean-to extension built to one side. In the early 20th century the internal layout of The Cottage and Ferry Cottage was changed again, expanding the domestic space of The Cottage at the expense of Ferry Cottage, to be offset by the construction of a two-storey backblock. Later in the 20th century bombing destroyed the western end of the cottages and Ferry Cottage was split into two smaller units. The last occupant of The Cottage made extensive internal changes to the interior, introducing architectural elements from elsewhere.
