Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by CgMs Consulting Ltd to undertake an archaeological investigation in advance of a residential development by Kendrick Construction Ltd at Yardley Grange, Church Road, Yardley. The archaeological excavation follows a previous desk-based assessment which identified that the development area was situated close to the medieval core of Yardley. The investigations revealed the two post-medieval boundary ditches, a feature of unknown purpose, and footings of the late 20th century nursing home. The only features and artefacts identified during the investigations were of post-medieval or modern date. No residual medieval finds were recovered and there was no evidence that the development area lay within the medieval settlement of Yardley. However, ground disturbance during the construction and demolition of the former Yardley Grange nursing home was clearly extensive and it is possible that these works could have destroyed any remains of earlier periods.
