Abstract:
A programme of invasive archaeological investigations was required by Jacobs on behalf of their client Transport Scotland, ahead of dualling works along the current route of the A9 trunk road between Luncarty and Pass of Birnam, Perth and Kinross. The archaeological investigations were undertaken within 15 Land Parcels, divided into Lower and Higher Impact Areas. A total of 433 trenches were excavated throughout the course of the works, equating to 22,170m2 of trenching. The majority of trenches were devoid of significant archaeological features, with the main features revealed relating to modern and post medieval agricultural practices. Significant archaeological features, interpreted as relating to prehistoric activity, were present within three land parcels (Land Parcels 04, 05, and 06). The types of features found were mainly simple pits or post holes, with larger and slightly more complex examples within Land Parcel 06 Field 5. Two of the features in this area also contained Late Neolithic ceramics. Potentially significant features were also present within Land Parcels 14 and 15, consisting of large pits and shallow linear features. Due to their position within or at the edge of the Murthly Designed Landscape, and given the relatively modern artefacts found, it is likely these features may relate to the landscape or previous agricultural use of the area.
