Abstract: |
Archaeological excavations were conducted by AOC Archaeology within the development area of Saughton Hall, Edinburgh. As part of a larger series of work aimed at the redevelopment of Saughton Park. The excavations were a continuation from a community project in 2014 and a series of archaeological evaluation and test pitting conducted in 2015 and 2016 where substantial foundations of the former Saughton House were discovered. The archaeological works revealed that a considerable extent of the foundations of Saughton House survived. These included the later Victorian editions as well as elements of the original 17th Century house foundations. The most recognisable foundations were those of the central corridor running through the house as well as original floor surfaces, interior and exterior walls with many of the foundation walls extending to over 0.5 m deep. |
