Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken on behalf of CgMs Consulting at Bagnall Land, Alrewas, Staffordshire (NGR SK 161 145). The earliest feature on site was an Early Bronze Age pit (possible water hole) that had been backfilled by numerous layers of fire cracked stone within a rich charcoal matrix. Although this was the only prehistoric feature firmly identified during the evaluation it is thought to belong to a wider zone of prehistoric activity visible in the surrounding landscape. The second phase was represented by a group of ditches which were similar in character and were grouped together on this basis. One of these features yielded a sherd of Roman pottery. The remaining features belong to the final phase of activity which relates to post-medieval or modern agricultural activity. |
