Abstract: |
Suffolk Archaeology CIC conducted a trial trench evaluation, compromising fifteen 20m long trenches on land west of the A140, Stuston, Suffolk on behalf of Essex and Suffolk water for a new proposed pipeline route. The trenching revealed two medieval features, including a pit and a ditch, with a small collection of undated ditches, natural features and hollows. The two most notable features which contained dating evidence was a small ditch located at the west of the works which contained possible Thetford ware (10th-11th century) and a small possible cooking pit which contained medieval course wares (13th-14th century). The route for the proposed pipeline ran parallel to the A140 at the northern end, which is known to be part of the Roman road from Colchester to Caistor St Edmunds. The evaluation works only discovered a single 2nd century Roman coin within topsoil deposits and a single 3rd century Roman coin a possible ditch. No other material dating to the Roman period was discovered suggesting that the focus for Roman activity is located closer to the known settlement area near Scole to the north. |
