Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology (WA) was commissioned by English Heritage (EH) to undertake this project between March and December 2012. The project was funded through the National Heritage Protection Commissions Programme under Activity 4H1.203 (EH 6400). The aims of the project were to: establish a community-based method of recording the London site that is capable of being used as a model for the conservation management of similar 'at risk' wreck sites; and to encourage community participation and management of the site. The site is being investigated by a team of local divers with limited archaeological experience and they had requested assistance. Key to the project was the drafting and trialling of an Archaeological Protocol, a recording system designed for use by the avocational team. The project was undertaken in three stages. In the first the Protocol was designed with the assistance of the avocational team, EH and Southend Museum and SMR. In the second stage WA carried out a diving project in September 2012 in co-operation with the avocational team and EH, during which 11 finds were recovered and recorded and 14 survey control points installed. Thereafter and during the third stage WA provided support and monitoring to the team, as well as drafting the final version of the Protocol and the other products. The project archive is currently held at WA under project number 83940, with the exception that the finds are currently in the care of EH before eventually being transferred to Southend Museum post-conservation. Original recording forms created by the avocational team form part of their ongoing archive. The project has had the following formal products: P1 - Site Investigation Plan (Diving Project Plan); P2 - Recording (Archaeological) Protocol (final; WA 83940.05); P3 - Technical Report (WA 83940.06); P4 - GIS Layers (control point positions); P5 - OASIS Report; P6 - Draft NAS Newsletter article; P7 - Project Archive. Dissemination is ongoing.
