Abstract: |
Wessex Archaeology Ltd was commissioned by Laing O'Rourke Infrastructure to undertake an archaeological watching brief to mitigate the potential loss of archaeological remains during groundworks associated with the renewal of water mains between Bradbourne and Wirksworth, Derbyshire. An archaeological desk-based assessment of the scheme was prepared by ARCUS in 2008. The renewal of the water mains involved the excavation of existing pipelines as well as the construction of new pipelines. Archaeological monitoring took place in areas where the scheme either a) passed through fields or b) through areas of archaeological interest or c) was not on the line of an existing pipeline. The watching brief was carried out between November 2010 and May 2011 in accordance with a Written Scheme of Investigation. Few archaeological deposits or artefacts were identified during the work. The partial footing of a stone wall and a spread of material relating to the mining industry were identified at Middleton and kerbstones were revealed beneath the road surface at Wirksworth. No other archaeological deposits were identified during the course of the watching brief. |
