Abstract: |
The evaluation revealed an undated ditch (F4008 Trench 46), a pit with a sherd of Early Bronze Age pottery (F4010 Trench 47), an undated pit with charcoal (F4014 Trench 36), and an urned cremation (F4004 Trench 37). At the base of Cremation Pit F4004 was an urned cremation, F4006 L4007. The cremation vessel was truncated and the rim was lost. The vessel is of Early Anglo Saxon date (5th - 7th century) and two glass beads were found in association with the cremated human bone. Undated Pit F4014 contained abundant charcoal. Given the proximity of Pit F4014 (Trench 36) to Urned Cremtion F4006 (Trench 37) it was considered that the feature may have been a remnant cremation pit broadly contemporary with Cremation Pit F4004 but the samples did not contain cremated bone. The feature may represent a charcoal production pit. |
