Sets out the factors which must be included in attempts to estimate settlement size and expansion in 225 sites with stone huts in the four counties of Peeblesshire, Roxburghshire, Northumberland and Berwickshire.

A ?7th-century name-stone, decorated with an incised lorgnette cross, can be paralleled at Lindisfarne. It is apparently unfinished but the stone was later re-used and the reverse carries a cruciform motif carved in relief. There is also a discussion of the inscription and decoration of a second Billingham grave-marker now in the British Museum. R N B

NZ 276423. Occupation dating from late 13th century was examined, and evidence found for flooding and levelling in 14th. The site was then redeveloped as a pair of burgage tenements fronting the street, with a boundary wall between, and the properties continued to develop into the modern period. Further evidence for flooding in late 13th/early 14th century was seen in an area to the south, where a river wall was then built and a tenement developed. Finds reported here are reference groups of medieval pottery, pipes, metalwork including a bronze cauldron, coins and bottles. Au(adp)

NT 975008. Excavation of the chapel site revealed two pits of the BA cemetery known from old records to have yielded pottery. Pit A contained a collared urn and was 14C-dated to 13th century bc; an inhumation could also belong to this period. The stone chapel, c 19m x 8m overall (nave and chancel) appears to date from 12th century, to have been destroyed in 14th, restored and used until ?15th century, though burials continued intermittently. Several graveslabs and the 12th-century font are described, as are the BA pottery (including old finds), medieval pottery, jet bead, window glass, metalwork and skeleton.
