Abstract:
A watching brief was maintained by Cotswold Archaeology during groundworks associated with gas main replacement in Old Abbey Court, Exeter. The proposed works were located within the site of the Priory of St James, a Cluniac monastic house. It was therefore considered possible that significant remains of Medieval or later date might survive within the proposed work area and may be exposed during trenching. Results: the works comprised the excavation of twenty seven trenches and pits, for the insertion of a replacement gas main. All of the trenches and pits exposed ground heavily disturbed by modern services to a depth of 0.6-1m below present ground level. Alluvial deposits were identified in the majority of the trenches at an average depth of 0.6m below present ground level. Conclusions: no evidence for archaeological activity was exposed within the excavations at Old Abbey Court. A major contributory factor for this has been the widespread disturbance resulting from previous service trenching. The absence of archaeological deposits may indicate that structural remains associated with St. James' Priory either were not present within the exact areas of the trenches, or may have been removed during the construction of the present 1960s housing development on the site and/or the original service trenching.
