Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Northshore Companies Ltd to conduct an evaluation comprising 3 no 2m by 2m trenches within the former Fordingbridge Club, Fordingbridge, Hampshire in advance of the proposed redevelopment of the site. The Site lies over a former late 17th to late 19th century Quaker cemetery with high potential for in situ and disarticulated human remains to survive beneath a 1980's extension to the Club. Two trenches were targeted on Graves shown on an 1858 cemetery plan. Both these trenches contained disturbed brick vaults and disarticulated human remains. A third trench, located over the site of a medieval burgage plot, had no archaeological remains. Made ground between 0.55 - 0.60 m thick overlay a mixed deposit overlying the burial vaults Disarticulated human remains and coffin furniture were recovered from this deposit and photographed for assessment following which they were re-interned on site. No articulated remains were noted, although there is still potential for these to survive.
