Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Dudgeon Offshore Wind Limited to prepare an archaeological desk based and geophysical assessment for the offshore elements of the Dudgeon Offshore Wind Farm project including the export cable route and landfall. The Offshore Wind Farm Study Area measured approximately 66 km2, the export cable route measured approximately 36 km in length, and the terrestrial Study Area comprised a 1 km buffer at the cable terminus. This assessment informed the Environmental Statement. The known archaeology consisted of: 12 wrecks and obstructions; 243 geophysical anomalies; and 133 terrestrial find spots, sites and archaeological activities. The potential archaeology consists of 31 documented losses; unknown and undocumented shipwrecks from various periods; stray finds of ship borne debris from various periods; potential for the presence of submerged palaeo-landscapes, dating from 700,000 BP to the Romano-British period; and potential for unknown terrestrial material from the Palaeolithic to present.
