Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology carried out phased evaluation and excavation of the site between 2000 and 2007. Extensive evidence for Neolithic pits was recorded and a significant assemblage of Peterborough Ware recovered. Pits and ditched field boundaries provided evidence of settlement activity in the Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age, but the area appears to have been less intensively used during the later Iron Age. In the Romano-British, Saxon and medieval periods the site was established and developed as a small farmstead with ditched enclosures and waterholes. A small Saxon inhumation cemetery recorded near the edge of the excavated area may belong to a contemporary phase of habitation.
