Abstract:
Archaeological Excavation produced evidence for nearly continuous human activity from the Late Bronze Age to the Medieval period, above the River Lark and into it floodplain. A Late Bronze Age waterhole was backfilled with refuse. intense Middle Iron Age activity included a pair of massive ditches enclosing a site including numerous pits, possibly a defensive enclosure built to dominate a crossing point of the river. A Roman farmstead was investigated, along with floodplain use. Activity continued through the Saxon period. There was medieval land reclamation, and a possible town boundary ditch. Medieval features represented activities which may be anticipated on the periphery of settlement, including crop processing, animal husbandry and iron working, including a kiln, with a rapid decline after the 14th century. Sizeable animal bone and environmental assemblages allow comparison through time, and the assemblage of decorated Middle Saxon pottery is the largest found in the region to date.
