Abstract: |
During November, 2012, a site walkover and GPS Survey was undertaken at Land off Hoo Road, Wainscott, Kent , following the stripping of overburden. The purpose of the was to ascertain whether machine stripping of the Site had revealed any further archaeological remains to those recorded during an archaeological evaluation/excavation at the site conducted in 2009. Areas investigated had been stripped of overburden down to natural geology by mechanical excavators using toothless buckets. Once the stripped surface had been comprehensively walked and visually inspected to ascertain whether any features were present, mapping of the stripped areas was undertaken by GPS. The surveyed areas were added the site plans from the 2009 excavation areas. No further archaeological remains were identified. Previous evaluation had indicated the areas investigated were of generally low archaeological potential. The watching brief confirmed that the subsoil in these areas had been heavily worked over by past intensive horticultural activity, this part of the site having formerly been allotment gardens. |
