Abstract: |
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by CgMs to undertake a walkover survey of land (88000) east of Chester Road, Malpas, Cheshire (NGR SJ 4907 4756) . The walkover followed an Archaeological Desk Based Assessment (DBA) completed by CgMs (2012) and discussions with the Development Control Archaeologist for Cheshire West and Chester (Julie Edwards, Chester Archaeology). The walkover survey was commissioned to assess the survival of earthworks within the Site and to better inform future strategies to mitigate the potential loss of archaeological remains. Two further phases of archaeological works were carried out. A metal detecting survey (88001) of the site found 90 objects. The earliest identifiable items date to the 14th to 15th century, with the vast majority of the material recovered of a post-medieval and modern date. The northern part of the site showed a concentrated area where the majority of the medieval finds came from. Of note was a lead object from the 14th/15th century thought to be a pilgrim's souvenir in form of ampulla. The information from both these surveys informed the judgement as to where to place a trench evaluation. In January 2016 an evaluation consisting of four trenches found features primarily relating to the post-medieval agricultural land use of the Site. Trenches 2 and 4 both identified post-medieval field boundaries, which correspond to field boundaries recorded on the 1836-1851 Tithe Map of Malpas. The only other features of significance were an undated pit within Trench 2 and a possible hollow way within Trench 3. The small pit contained frequent small and medium sized glacial pebbles and sandstone, none of which appeared to be burnt. The date and function of the pit is unclear but environmental evidence has identified charred hazelnut shell from within its fill. The potential hollow way took the form of a shallow depression sealed beneath a layer containing 2 sherds of Romano-British pottery. |
